Where am I and Who are These People?

February 19, 2008

It’s 2008 and we’re “at war” with an indefinable group of people who, it is claimed by our government, hate us because of our way of life. We’re the richest country on earth and yet people starve in our cities and millions have no access to health care. We consistently claim the moral high ground while our history is rife with ethnic cleansing, slavery and empire-like disregard for other nations. It is my belief that we have ceded our government to a thing we call a market which is controlled by a bunch of major banks and corporations.

In the midst of this horror we have a congress focused on the rear end of a major league pitcher and whether or not a professional football team dishonestly filmed the plans of a competitor.

Sometimes my feelings of impotence make me want to forget it and just go play golf but I can’t. I find that I have to do what feels right to me and at this time of my life what feels right is to speak up. There’s a section of Gandhi quotes on my home page and today’s quote is “Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.”

This is a time when it is critical that I not let these occasional feelings of impotence overwhelm me. It is an election year and it’s very, very clear to me that most of the people running for the Presidency have been complicit in getting this country to the ridiculous place it occupies today.

There is one candidate who, it is claimed, doesn’t have the requisite experience…..good. His opponents say he is a mere rhetorician….wrong. Barack Obama is the only candidate who, in my opinion, has the necessary inexperience and lack of time in grade to be able to turn this country into what we claim to be. He is the only one who may not have been poisoned yet by the lies we tell ourselves about our high principles while we act deplorably both here and everywhere else on the planet.

Much of what is happening today seems to have started with Cain and Abel. I have great difficulty in doing what I need to do to be the man I can be. That occupies most of my time.
